Get test results

You can get your test results online without having to visit the surgery.

How to get test results

  1. You can log into your NHS App to get your test results.

Click on the GP Health record tab and then Test results. You will see the results and the clinician who filed the result will have marked it Normal, Satisfactory or Abnormal. There may be further comments visible that the clinician has added.

If you haven't registered yet, you can use the link below to download the NHS app.

Please note: We do have a strict policy regarding confidentiality and data protection. This means that we can only give out results to the person they relate to unless that person has given permission in writing, or if you have proxy access to their records. We may be able to give out result if the person the result relates to is not capable of understanding them and this is clear to our care navigator.

2. You can also register for online services at the practice by getting a SystmOnline log on.

This allows access via a PC or your phone and also offers access to the Airmid app. To get a log on you need to attend the surgery (either branch) with your ID during opening hours.

3. You can telephone reception, preferably in the afternoon to ask about test results. The receptionist will be able to tell you if your result is normal, satisfactory or abnormal and any message that the clinician has put on the result (e.g make a telephone appt to discuss). They will not be able to give advice about what to do other than this.

4. Your clinician may email or text you about test results if they want to give you more information, advice or instructions.

Your clinician will not contact you about normal or satisfactory results. However, for any unexpected abnormal or concerning results that need action, you will be contacted. You will not be contacted about minor abnormalities unless follow up is definitely needed. For minor abnormalities there may be a comment entered on the result indicating what, if any, action is needed

How long does it take to get my test results?

When you attend a test of any kind, you may be told how long you should expect to wait for the results. Blood test results usually take five working days to get back and be checked by your GP or responsible clinician.

Swabs can take up to a week.

Can I request results on behalf of another person?

Our receptionists will only give results to the person they belong to, unless you have registered for proxy access. Please see our separate page about this.

Urine samples usually take 3-4 working days.

Some specialist tests are sent away by the lab and may take longer- these include some specialised hormone tests, 24 hour urine collection tests, genetic tests, and medication level testing.

What do my results mean?

Borderline means that the result is outside of reference range and your clinician will usually contact you or arrange for reception to contact you to give advice. This may be some days after the result is filed. In general clinicians will choose this comment for results that need action that is not urgent.

Satisfactory means that the result may have one or more parameters (numbers) out of the reference range but that these are not clinically important, have been noted before and are explained, or are normal for the patient. Usually, no action is required from this result but if it is the clinician will arrange for you to be contacted.

Abnormal but expected means that the result is not within normal ranges, but the clinician has reviewed this, and no action is needed because this is a known result that is being managed.

Abnormal This is usually a new abnormal result, and the clinician may have added a comment to explain what is needed or will be planning for you to be contacted. If you see a result marked abnormal and you have not heard from us within a week then please contact us via the triage form or by speaking to a receptionist if you are unable to use the triage form.

If you have questions about test results that you have reviewed online or via the app, please use the triage form to request a review with a doctor or nurse. For queries about high cholesterol levels, you can ask for an appointment with one of our cardiovascular nurses.
